Some escape rooms challenge you with puzzles. Others tell a story. The best ones do both, creating an experience that feels less like a game and more like stepping into another world. InBlack Escape Rooms invited us to experience this at their Eaton Centre location, and it definitely felt like an escape from reality.

It was a rainy Sunday morning as we made our way down the stairs of a storefront on Yonge street to start our Mystery Store themed afternoon. After storing our belongings in convenient lockers, we were led to a dark room. When the door closed behind us, the magic started with audio clues establishing the story and guiding us on where to begin to solve the clues.

The successful solving of each clue led to something happening-- a light turning on over our next puzzle, a hidden screen in another area of the room suddenly coming to life, a door opening to reveal a whole other room full of more secrets. The second room was wonderfully detailed, with shelves overflowing with curious objects, strange artifacts hinting at untold stories, and every corner seeming to conceal a surprise waiting to be uncovered.

Rather than feeling like a series of puzzles placed inside a room, the challenges felt woven into the environment itself. Each discovery revealed another piece of the shop's mystery, encouraging us to explore, experiment, and pay attention to even the smallest details. We gasped and giggled our way through the experience, truly delighted with everything.

Some puzzles were trickier than others, and a couple seemed a little bit buggy or finicky, you could do the right solution but if you didn't have something placed precisely on hidden sensors, it wouldn't immediately register as correct and let you move on, but these were minor things that didn't really take away from our experience. The room struck a satisfying balance between challenge and accessibility, keeping everyone engaged throughout the adventure.

The Mystery Store room is just one of several themes InBlack Eaton has, and it's worth noting that one of the other rooms is horror themed-- we could hear the screams and sound effects from that room in ours, which did break the immersion slightly. One other thing to note: the backstory of this room does feature a suicide, which as a story element may be triggering for some people, and may be a bit mature for kids. The room itself doesn't focus on this at all, it was just part of the preamble, but something to be aware of.

We successfully solved the room in a little over an hour and were already talking about going back to try more themes. It felt as though we had spent an hour inside a living storybook. The combination of imaginative world-building, clever puzzle design, and immersive storytelling made for an experience that lingered long after we left.

Escape rooms are the perfect rainy day activity in Toronto, and this location is a truly unexpected hidden gem in downtown. What made the experience particularly memorable was its sense of immersion. The designers created a space that invited curiosity, rewarding players for thinking creatively and engaging with the story. The magical theme wasn't simply decoration, it shaped the entire experience, from the puzzles to the atmosphere.

For anyone looking for an escape room that offers more than locks and keys, InBlack Escape Rooms prove just how captivating immersive entertainment can be.
